DeSantis cites ‘Gulf of America’ in winter storm order after Trump rebranding

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Issues Emergency Order in Response to Gulf Winter Weather
On the same day President Donald Trump made headlines by announcing a plan to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America,” Florida Governor Ron DeSantis took swift action in response to a historic winter weather emergency.
DeSantis issued Executive Order 25-13 on Monday in anticipation of a significant meteorological system moving across the Gulf of America and the Interstate 10 corridor. The order detailed the potential impacts of an area of low pressure interacting with Arctic air, bringing widespread winter weather to North Florida beginning on Tuesday, January 21, 2025.
The order outlined a series of actions to be taken by state, local, and other authorities to prepare for the impending weather conditions. While the projected ice and snow totals may be considered meager by northern standards, the impact is expected to be paralyzing across the affected region, which includes Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida.
DeSantis’ decision to issue the emergency order coincided with Trump’s federal executive order, titled “Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness,” which renamed the area formerly known as the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.” This move was part of a broader initiative by Trump to promote American heritage and honor visionary and patriotic Americans.
In addition to the Gulf of America renaming, Trump’s executive order also included the rebranding of several U.S. military bases, such as Fort Lee becoming Fort Gregg-Adams, Fort Bragg becoming Fort Liberty, Fort A.P. Hill becoming Fort Walker, and Fort Hood becoming Fort Cavazos. These changes were made amidst a push to remove memorials and symbols associated with the Confederacy.
Trump’s decision to revert the name of Denali, the continent’s highest peak in Alaska, back to Mount McKinley also garnered attention. This particular change was met with some resistance within his own party.
As DeSantis and Trump made significant moves in the realm of naming and branding, the nation awaits the implementation of these changes and the potential impact they may have on American identity and heritage.
As the winter weather approaches, residents in the affected areas are urged to stay informed and prepared for the impending conditions. DeSantis’ emergency order serves as a reminder of the importance of proactive measures in the face of unpredictable weather events.
