House GOP takes victory lap after passing Trump’s ‘one big, beautiful bill’

House Republicans were in high spirits on Thursday morning after successfully passing President Donald Trump’s “one big, beautiful bill.” House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., declared, “It’s finally morning in America again,” as he addressed reporters. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act passed with a narrow margin of 215 to 214, with all Democrats and two Republicans, Reps. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., and Warren Davidson, R-Ohio, voting against the bill. House Freedom Caucus Chair Andy Harris, R-Md., voted “present.”
“This is a generational, truly nation-shaping legislation that will reduce spending, permanently lower taxes for families and job creators, secure the border, unleash American energy dominance, restore peace through strength, and make government work more efficiently and effectively for all Americans,” Johnson emphasized.
The passage of the bill marks a significant victory for Trump and House Republicans, who were able to overcome policy disagreements to fulfill Trump’s key campaign promises, including an extension of his 2017 tax cuts and provisions such as no tax on tips, overtime, and Social Security.
“We look forward to the Senate’s timely consideration of this once-in-a-generation legislation. We stand ready to continue our work together to deliver on the one big, beautiful bill, as President Trump named it himself. We’re going to send that to his desk. We’re going to get there by Independence Day, on July 4th, and we are going to celebrate a new golden age in America,” Johnson expressed.
House leaders took turns expressing gratitude to Republicans for coming together to pass the bill. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., commended the unity and determination of the Republicans in ensuring the bill’s success despite facing challenges.
Trump also celebrated the victory on Truth Social, praising Speaker Mike Johnson and the House Leadership for their efforts in passing the “Historic Bill” and urging the Senate to act swiftly. The multi-trillion-dollar bill encompasses various provisions aligned with Trump’s “America First” agenda, including tax reductions, border security measures, national defense enhancements, Medicaid reforms, and reversals of Biden-era energy policies.
Despite the House Republicans’ triumph, the bill still faces a significant hurdle in the Senate, where Republican leaders are aiming to have it on Trump’s desk by the Fourth of July. Senate Republicans have indicated their intention to make changes to the bill, particularly concerning proposed Medicaid and SNAP cuts and the SALT deduction cap.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has already criticized the bill, stating, “This is not one big, beautiful bill. It’s ugly.” The Senate Democrats are gearing up to scrutinize and challenge the provisions of Trump’s legislation as it moves forward in the legislative process.
In conclusion, the passage of Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” in the House marks a significant milestone for Republicans, but the challenges lie ahead in the Senate. The fate of the legislation will be determined in the coming weeks as lawmakers navigate through potential amendments and negotiations to deliver on Trump’s ambitious agenda.
