Russia accuses Kyiv of striking nuclear power plant as Ukraine marks independence day

Russia has accused Ukraine of launching drone attacks that caused a fire at a nuclear power plant in the Kursk region. The incident occurred overnight as Ukraine celebrated its independence.
According to Russian officials, multiple power and energy facilities were targeted in the attacks. The fire at the nuclear plant was quickly extinguished, with no reported injuries. Although a transformer was damaged, radiation levels remained normal.
The United Nations’ nuclear watchdog expressed awareness of the incident but had not received independent confirmation. The director-general emphasized the importance of protecting all nuclear facilities.
Ukraine has not yet commented on the alleged attack. In addition to the nuclear plant fire, a blaze at the Ust-Luga port in Russia’s Leningrad region was also reported. The regional governor stated that approximately 10 Ukrainian drones were shot down, causing debris to ignite the fire.
Russian air defenses claimed to have intercepted 95 Ukrainian drones over Russian territory. In retaliation, Russia fired 72 drones, along with a cruise missile, into Ukraine. Ukraine’s air force reported that 48 drones were shot down or jammed.
These incidents coincided with Ukraine’s independence day celebrations, marking the nation’s declaration of independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. President Volodymyr Zelensky delivered a video address from Kyiv’s Independence Square, emphasizing Ukraine’s resilience and commitment to building a secure and peaceful future.
On this special day, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney visited Kyiv for meetings with President Zelensky. The support of international allies, such as Canada, was highlighted as crucial for Ukraine’s ongoing efforts.
Norway announced significant military aid, pledging approximately $695 million for air defense systems. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store revealed plans to fund two Patriot systems, including missiles, in partnership with Germany. Norway will also assist in procuring air defense radar.
Despite diplomatic efforts and international support, fighting continued in eastern Ukraine, with Russia claiming to have seized two villages in the Donetsk region. The conflict between Russia and Ukraine persists, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by the region.
