Search for woman swept into water at Cape Spear now a recovery mission, RNC says

Emergency crews are currently conducting a search for a woman who was swept into the water at Cape Spear on Wednesday evening. The incident was reported around 4 p.m., with a man and a woman being swept into the water. The man was able to make it back to shore before rescue crews arrived and is currently being treated for minor injuries in the hospital. Unfortunately, the woman was unable to get back to shore and is still missing.

St. John’s Regional Fire Department Platoon Chief Dean Foley stated that there is “no likelihood” that the woman survived, and the search is now considered a recovery mission. Toni Ryan, a long-time resident of the area, expressed her concern and fear for the situation, emphasizing the dangers of the water at Cape Spear.

Various organizations, including the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, Rovers Ground Search and Rescue, and the Canadian Coast Guard, are all involved in the search efforts. Parks Canada has also issued a statement urging the public to follow warning signs and stay on designated trails in the area to ensure their safety.

Pat Ryan, vice-president of trail management with the East Coast Trail Association, echoed the importance of staying on designated paths and being aware of the risks when visiting the area. He emphasized the need for visitors to be cautious and mindful of their surroundings while enjoying the natural beauty of Cape Spear.
