REAL ID goes into effect Tuesday – where’s the least compliance?

As the deadline for REAL ID compliance approaches, many travelers across the country may face obstacles when trying to board a flight for their summer vacation. While some states have achieved high levels of compliance, others still have a significant portion of their population that will require a passport to fly.

According to a CBS survey, states like Colorado, Florida, and Texas have reported high levels of compliance, with Texas reaching 98%. However, states like New Jersey have lower compliance rates but top the nation in passport ownership, with 69% of residents holding a passport.

States like Delaware, California, and New York also rank high in compliance, with many of them serving as major international travel hubs. On the other hand, states with lower passport ownership rates tend to be those without major airports, such as West Virginia and Mississippi.

The REAL ID Act requires individuals to provide additional documentation, such as a Social Security card, to obtain a REAL ID, which will be required for air travel and entry into most government or military installations. The law was passed in response to the 9/11 terror attacks but has faced multiple delays over the years.

Despite the impending deadline, there is still confusion surrounding the requirements of the REAL ID Act. It is important to note that a REAL ID is not required for entry into less-secure government locations like post offices.

As the deadline approaches, travelers are urged to ensure they have the proper identification to avoid any issues when trying to board a flight. Stay informed and up to date on the latest developments regarding REAL ID compliance to ensure a smooth travel experience.
