NY Republicans cite DeSantis’ Israel rescue in urgent call to Hochul

New York Senate Republicans are calling on Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul to assist Jewish New Yorkers who may be stranded in Israel due to the escalating conflict with Iran. State Senator Bill Weber, whose district has a large Jewish population, highlighted the efforts of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis in facilitating flights to bring residents back to Tampa from Cyprus.

Weber emphasized the need for New York State to take similar action to bring back its residents from Israel now that a cease-fire has been announced and safe flying is possible. He urged Governor Hochul to act swiftly to ensure the safe return of New Yorkers currently in harm’s way.

Senate Minority Leader Rob Ortt echoed Weber’s sentiments, stressing the importance of providing safe transport for New Yorkers unable to return home amid the Iran conflict. Ortt, along with Senate Antisemitism Working Group Chairman Jack Martins, penned a letter to Governor Hochul urging her to take action and commending DeSantis for his efforts in assisting Jewish Americans.

The letter emphasized New York’s strong connection to Israel and the state’s responsibility to support Jewish communities and provide urgent help to New Yorkers affected by the conflict. It called on Governor Hochul to lead in standing with Israel and ensuring the safety of New Yorkers caught in the crossfire.

The call for action comes as Israeli airspace remains closed and the situation on the ground in Israel remains uncertain. State Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani’s upset victory in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary added another layer of complexity to the situation, with Mamdani facing accusations of antisemitism and controversial statements regarding Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Despite the challenges, New York State Republicans are united in their commitment to bringing home all New Yorkers affected by the conflict and standing in solidarity with Israel. The urgency of the situation demands immediate action from Governor Hochul to ensure the safety and well-being of New York’s Jewish population.

As the situation continues to unfold, it is imperative for Governor Hochul to prioritize the repatriation of stranded New Yorkers and demonstrate strong leadership in supporting those affected by the conflict. The safety and security of all New Yorkers, especially those caught in harm’s way, must be the top priority as the state navigates through this challenging time.
