Party leaders promise to boost home building, help seniors and speed up resource project approvals

Federal party leaders have recently unveiled a series of policies aimed at addressing key issues affecting Canadians. The Liberal party, led by Mark Carney, has proposed measures to boost housing construction, make life more affordable for seniors, and speed up approvals for natural resource projects.

Carney emphasized the impact of U.S. President Donald Trump’s global trade war on the economy and financial markets, stating that many Canadians are concerned about their jobs and retirement savings. As part of their plan, the Liberals would lower the minimum RRIF withdrawal by 25% for one year, providing seniors with more flexibility in managing their retirement savings. Additionally, the party plans to increase the GIS by five percent for one year, benefiting low-income seniors with tax-free payments of up to $652.

On the other hand, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre announced his own initiatives for seniors, including raising the tax-free income threshold and allowing contributions to RRSPs until the age of 73. Poilievre also proposed the creation of a “Rapid Resource Project Office” to streamline regulatory approvals for resource projects, aiming to expedite the process without compromising environmental standards.

Meanwhile, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh unveiled a national housing strategy that seeks to double the pace of home building in Canada over four years. The plan includes a $8 billion transfer to provinces called the Canadian Homes Transfer, as well as the creation of a Communities First Fund to support infrastructure development for new housing projects. Singh emphasized the importance of affordable housing, stronger rent protections, and job creation in the construction sector.

Carney also outlined environmental measures, including the establishment of new national and urban parks, funding for Indigenous-led conservation projects, and investments in water security technology. The Liberal leader pledged to protect Canada’s natural heritage and combat environmental challenges such as illegal wildlife trade and invasive species.
