‘What are the odds?’: P.E.I. man wins new cottage in raffle after house burned down this summer

After losing his home in a devastating fire earlier this summer, Daniel Drouin from Alberton, P.E.I. has experienced a stroke of incredible luck by winning a raffle for a new cottage.

Drouin, a musician, was settling in for an afternoon nap before a performance when he received the life-changing call. Having purchased a $50 raffle ticket for the Big Brothers, Big Sisters draw before the fire, he was initially hesitant but decided to participate at the encouragement of his girlfriend.

With approximately 14,000 tickets sold for the draw, Drouin was chosen as the grand prize winner and given the option to choose between the pre-fabricated cottage or $150,000. The cottage, although not accompanied by a piece of property, presents an opportunity for Drouin to reunite with his two children whom he has been living apart from since the fire.

On a dark July night, Drouin received a call from his son informing him that their house was engulfed in flames. Thanks to his son’s quick actions in alerting the fire department, everyone in the house was able to evacuate safely. Unfortunately, Drouin’s house will need to be torn down as a result of the fire.

Despite the challenges he has faced in recent weeks, winning the raffle for a new cottage has given Drouin a sense of hope and a fresh start for himself and his family. As he prepares to visit Charlottetown to see his new cottage and take care of necessary paperwork, Drouin is grateful for the unexpected turn of events that has brought positivity into his life.
