US Election 2024

Conservatives reject Trump’s Lindsey Graham endorsement

Former President Donald Trump caused quite a stir within the political right last week when he endorsed Sen. Lindsey Graham for re-election on Truth Social. The announcement garnered a flood of backlash, with many prominent figures expressing their disagreement with Trump’s decision.

Retired Army Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, who briefly served as national security advisor during Trump’s first term, expressed his disapproval of Graham, stating, “Not someone I can get behind. I’ll go to the gates with you but I won’t take one step forward with him.” This sentiment was echoed by many others on social media platforms.

Despite the negative feedback, Trump stood by his endorsement, declaring that Graham has his “Complete and Total Endorsement for Re-Election” and assured followers that the senator “WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN.” However, the criticism continued to pour in, with conservative commentators like Shawn Farash and Chad Prather voicing their opposition to Graham.

Additionally, Townhall columnist Scott Morefield criticized Trump’s endorsement, highlighting the disparity between Graham and other conservative candidates like Chip Roy, Bob Good, and Thomas Massie. Trump had previously attacked Rep. Massie on Truth Social, vowing to lead the charge against him, likening him to former Rep. Liz Cheney.

In response to the backlash, Graham’s campaign manager Mark Knoop defended the senator, stating, “Senator Graham shares President Trump’s frustration with Rep. Massie. Rep. Massie has become the most reliable vote for Democrats on critical issues opposing President Trump’s agenda.”

Despite the controversy, Trump’s endorsement of Graham remains steadfast, with the senator expressing his gratitude for the support. Pro-life groups are set to back Graham’s re-election bid, with a press conference scheduled for Monday to show their support.

While Trump’s endorsement may carry weight within certain circles, it remains to be seen how voters will respond. Graham, who has been in the Senate for over two decades, faces re-election in 2026. The divide within the conservative movement over his candidacy underscores the complexity of political alliances and the importance of grassroots support in upcoming elections.
