House Democrats to hold ‘Day of Action’ to push back against GOP-backed spending bill

House Democrats are gearing up for a “Day of Action” across the nation in response to what they are calling a “diabolical Republican scheme” to enact the largest Medicaid cut in U.S. history. This bold move follows the recent passage of a stopgap spending bill by Congress to avert a government shutdown.
The Senate approved the spending bill with a vote of 54-46, with Sen. Rand Paul being the sole Republican to oppose it. The majority of Democrat senators also voted against the bill, except for Sen. Jeanne Shaheen and Independent Sen. Angus King, who sided with the Republicans. The bill, known as a continuing resolution, will maintain current spending levels until October 1st, keeping the government funded.
If the spending bill had not been passed by the deadline, a partial government shutdown would have ensued. President Trump supported the bill and urged lawmakers to pass it. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries criticized the bill, stating that it would adversely impact veterans, families, seniors, and everyday Americans.
In response to the passage of the bill, House Democrats, led by Jeffries, announced plans for a “Day of Action” to combat the Republican initiative. This coordinated effort will involve partnerships with elected officials at all levels of government, as well as unions, civil rights organizations, and concerned citizens. Jeffries emphasized that Democrats are a coalition working together to improve the lives of Americans and counter the actions of the current administration.
The Senate’s approval of the spending bill came after a procedural vote, in which Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer helped Republicans overcome a filibuster. Jeffries has refrained from commenting on his confidence in Schumer following his support for the Republican-backed legislation.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, it is clear that both parties are mobilizing to advocate for their respective agendas. The upcoming “Day of Action” spearheaded by House Democrats signals a proactive approach to addressing key issues facing the nation. Stay tuned for further developments on this critical issue.
