4 current, former Texas deputies from same sheriff’s office die by suicide just weeks apart

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office in Texas is grappling with a devastating trend as four current and former deputies have died by apparent suicide over a six-week period. The tragic series of events began on Feb. 6 when retired Deputy Long Nguyen took his own life. Deputy Christina Kohler, who had been missing for over a week, was found dead in a similar manner on March 13.
The heartbreaking news continued as former Deputy Maria Vasquez’s body was discovered just three days later. The Houston Medical Examiner confirmed that Vasquez, who had retired from the agency in December, died by apparent suicide. On March 19, retired Deputy William Bozeman, who had served the Harris County Sheriff’s Office for 24 years, also succumbed to suicide.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez expressed deep sorrow over the loss of his deputies, emphasizing the fragile nature of life and the importance of looking out for one another. The president of the Harris County Deputies’ Organization, Jose Lopez, echoed this sentiment, acknowledging the surprise and devastation felt by the community.
In response to the tragic events, the sheriff’s office has implemented mental health initiatives to address the alarming trend. Lopez has been actively supporting his fellow deputies in processing their grief and emphasizing the need for self-care and mutual support within the law enforcement community.
The string of suicides among Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by those in high-stress professions and the critical importance of mental health awareness and support. As the community mourns the loss of these dedicated individuals, efforts are being made to provide resources and assistance to prevent further tragedies and promote overall well-being among law enforcement personnel.
