Republican senators hint it is time sanctuary cities impeding ICE be defunded

Republican senators are expressing frustration with liberal sanctuary cities like Los Angeles that are obstructing federal immigration authorities from enforcing the law. Some senators are calling for the legislative branch to step in and cut off funding to these cities.

Senator Katie Britt of Alabama stated, “We have to say, ‘Enough is enough.’ I don’t understand why we would continue to give federal dollars to someone who doesn’t abide by federal law. I mean, think about that. That is very simple.” She emphasized that sanctuary cities are essentially condoning criminal activity by allowing lawlessness and refusing to cooperate with federal authorities.

Senator Bernie Moreno of Ohio echoed this sentiment, stating, “Nobody is above the law. So, if you have a mayor or county executive that’s not following federal law, that’s completely unacceptable. And the tool that we have here is federal funding.” He called for a firm stance on cutting off funding to sanctuary cities that do not comply with federal immigration laws.

Senator Rick Scott of Florida emphasized that sanctuary cities should not receive federal funding, as they are not prioritizing the safety of their citizens. He stressed the need for an immigration system that works and ensures that individuals entering the country are properly vetted.

On the other side of the aisle, Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia stated that sanctuary city issues are not prevalent in his state. Senator Angus King of Maine declined to comment, focusing on other priorities. Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana emphasized the need for communities to follow the law or face the consequences of their actions.

Senator Roger Marshall of Tennessee highlighted the impact of sanctuary policies on law enforcement, citing the LA riots as an example where local officials did not assist ICE agents in trouble.
