U.S. edges Czechs to reach final at women’s hockey worlds
The United States women’s hockey team secured their spot in the final of the women’s hockey world championship with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the host Czech Republic in Ceske Budejovice. Kelly Pannek was the hero for the Americans, scoring the game-winning goal in the final period.
The U.S. will now face either defending champion Canada or last year’s bronze medalist Finland in Sunday’s final. With this win, the Americans extended their perfect record against the Czechs at the worlds to 6-0 and their semifinal record to 3-0.
Laila Edwards also found the back of the net for the U.S., while captain Hilary Knight notched an assist to add to her impressive record at the worlds. Goalie Aerin Frankel made 10 crucial saves to help secure the victory for her team.
Pannek continued her impressive form in the tournament, leading the U.S. team with four goals. Her determination paid off as she netted the decisive goal by pouncing on a rebound in the final period.
The Americans dominated the second period, outshooting the Czechs 17-2 and eventually equalizing through Edwards on a power play. Despite the Czechs taking the lead in the opening period with a goal from Tereze Plosova, they were unable to hold off the relentless pressure from the U.S.
The Czechs, who will now compete in the bronze medal game for the fourth consecutive tournament, put up a valiant effort in front of their home crowd of nearly 6,000 spectators. However, they ultimately fell short against a determined U.S. team.
The women’s hockey world championship has been full of thrilling moments and intense competition, and the final promises to be an exciting matchup. Fans can look forward to an epic showdown as the U.S. aims to capture the championship title against their formidable opponents.
