Protecting the playing field: GOP urges governors to take action on women’s sports

Republican Senators Jim Risch of Idaho and Tommy Tuberville of Alabama are leading the charge to uphold President Donald Trump’s executive order to keep men out of women’s sports. The senators are urging governors across the country to adhere to this order and take state-level action to ensure that female athletes are treated fairly and equally nationwide.
In February, President Trump issued an executive order titled “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports” to protect the fairness, safety, and equal opportunity for female athletes. Risch and Tuberville are calling on governors to enforce this order and prevent biological men from competing in women’s sports.
According to the senators, the majority of Americans agree that biological men should not be allowed to compete in women’s sports. They emphasize the importance of recognizing the significant biological differences between men and women in athletic competition to maintain a level playing field for female athletes.
Risch and Tuberville have sent a letter to the National Governor’s Association, highlighting the decisive action taken by their states to protect women’s sports. They express concern that many governors have yet to take similar action, putting the fairness of female athletes at risk.
The senators stress that state-level action is essential to ensure that female athletes receive the same assurance of fairness nationwide. They commend states that have already implemented policies aligning with President Trump’s executive order and are ready to partner with governors to implement similar measures.
In addition to their efforts at the state level, Risch and Tuberville have introduced the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act in the Senate to codify Trump’s executive order. They have also reached out to the International Olympic Committee and the NCAA to safeguard opportunities for female athletes during competitions and clarify their stance on the privacy and safety of female athletes in changing rooms.
As champions for women’s sports, Senators Risch and Tuberville are committed to preserving the rights and opportunities that generations of women have fought to secure. Through their advocacy and legislative initiatives, they aim to ensure that female athletes can compete and excel in athletics in a fair and safe environment.
