CBP officers seize over $14M in alleged methamphetamine at Texas southern border

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Pharr International Bridge between South Texas and Mexico recently made a significant discovery. A shipment of over $14 million worth of methamphetamine was found hidden within shipments of bell peppers and cucumbers. The discovery took place on April 11, when CBP officers encountered a tractor trailer entering the U.S. from Mexico at the international bridge cargo facility.

Upon inspection of the truck, a CBP officer decided to refer the 18-wheeler for further inspection. The secondary inspection involved a thorough physical examination of the truck using non-intrusive equipment as well as a canine team. During this inspection, the team of officers uncovered 300 packages of alleged methamphetamine, weighing approximately 1,635 pounds, concealed within the trailer.

CBP officers wasted no time in seizing the narcotics and the vehicle. The investigation was then handed over to Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) for further action. Port Director Carlos Rodriguez commended the efforts of the CBP officers, stating, “Our CBP officers continue to use all tools and resources to safeguard our borders by preventing these harmful narcotics from reaching America’s streets.”

This significant bust comes on the heels of another major seizure in March, where CBP confiscated 650 pounds of fentanyl, marking a 24% increase from the previous month. The monthly report for March also revealed a nationwide surge in seizures of cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, fentanyl, and marijuana, with a 47% increase from February. Specifically, cocaine seizures rose by 32%, and methamphetamine seizures saw a staggering 72% increase from the previous month.

The continuous efforts of CBP officers in intercepting these illicit substances highlight the ongoing battle against drug trafficking at the southern border. The collaboration between CBP and HSI plays a crucial role in preventing dangerous drugs from infiltrating communities across the country.
