Putin ‘mocking’ Trump peace efforts in Ukraine with mass civilian strikes, Poland says

Poland’s foreign minister, Radoslaw Sikorski, has called on President Donald Trump to take decisive action against Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ongoing aggression in Ukraine. Following a deadly attack that claimed the lives of 34 people, including two children, on Palm Sunday, Sikorski expressed his outrage at the latest wave of Russian assaults on Ukraine.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the European Union’s foreign ministers meeting in Luxembourg, Sikorski emphasized that Ukraine had agreed to a ceasefire over a month ago, only to be met with relentless Russian attacks in cities like Kryvyi Rih and Sumy. The foreign minister condemned Russia’s actions as a blatant disregard for international norms and a mockery of Ukraine’s efforts to de-escalate the conflict.

The most recent attack in Sumy saw Russia launch two ballistic missiles into the city center, claiming to target a meeting of Ukrainian military officials. The strike resulted in the deaths of 30 people and left 119 others injured, with conflicting reports about the identities of the casualties. This assault came shortly after a devastating attack on Kryvyi Rih, President Zelenskyy’s hometown, where 19 people, including nine children, lost their lives in a missile strike near a playground.

Sikorski urged President Trump and his administration to recognize the gravity of the situation and take necessary actions to hold Russia accountable for its aggression. The foreign minister’s plea comes amidst growing international condemnation of Russia’s actions, with European leaders denouncing the attacks as war crimes and calling for tougher sanctions to cripple Russia’s economy and halt its military operations in Ukraine.

Despite Trump’s acknowledgment of the attacks as “terrible,” he suggested that they may have been a mistake. However, the relentless onslaught of Russian air bombs, drones, and missiles on Ukraine paints a stark reality of the escalating conflict. According to reports, Russian forces have launched thousands of air bombs, drones, and missiles in recent weeks, causing widespread devastation and loss of life in Ukraine.

In the face of such brazen aggression, the international community must stand united in condemning Russia’s actions and supporting Ukraine’s efforts to defend its sovereignty. With the ongoing conflict showing no signs of abating, it is imperative for world leaders to take decisive action to prevent further bloodshed and restore peace in the region.
