Record low for Democratic Party favorable ratings in new national poll

The Democratic Party is facing a significant decline in its favorable ratings, as indicated by a recent national poll. According to the latest CNN survey, only 29% of respondents have a favorable view of the party, while 54% hold an unfavorable opinion. This marks a record low in CNN polling history, dating back over three decades.
The drop in the Democrats’ favorability rating has been quite steep, with a four-point decrease since early January and a significant 20-point plunge since January 2021, just before President Joe Biden took office for his first term. Among Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents, only 63% now hold a favorable view of the party, down from 72% in January and a steep decline from 81% four years ago.
The Democratic Party finds itself in a challenging position following the setbacks of the last election, where Republicans regained control of the White House and the Senate, while also defending their House majority. In comparison, the GOP’s favorability rating stands at 36%, with 48% expressing an unfavorable view. The Republican Party’s favorability rating has remained unchanged since January, with a slight increase in the unfavorable rating.
The recent CNN poll also revealed that a majority of Democrats (57%) believe their leaders should primarily focus on stopping the GOP agenda rather than seeking common ground with Republicans. This marks a shift from previous polling during President Trump’s first term, where a significant number of Democrats supported working with Republicans.
The survey was conducted before a recent move by 10 Democrats in the Senate, including Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, to support a GOP-crafted federal government spending bill to avoid a shutdown. This decision sparked controversy among some on the left who advocate for a more aggressive stance against the Trump administration.
In terms of political leadership, respondents were asked to name the leader who best reflects the core values of the Democratic Party. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York garnered 10% of the responses, followed by former Vice President Kamala Harris (9%), Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont (8%), and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York (6%).
Overall, the Democratic Party is facing significant challenges in terms of public perception and leadership alignment. These findings highlight the need for the party to reassess its strategies and messaging in order to regain support and credibility among voters.
