Halifax man gets house arrest for carrying loaded gun, cocaine trafficking

A 29-Year-Old Halifax Man Avoids Prison Time for Gun and Drug Charges
After being found guilty of carrying a loaded handgun and trafficking cocaine in 2020, Nathaniel Dominic White, a 29-year-old man from Halifax, has been sentenced to two years of house arrest followed by two years of probation. This decision was made by Nova Scotia Supreme Court Justice Peter Rosinski, who released his sentencing verdict on Friday.
The Crown had initially sought a five-year prison sentence for White, citing the dangerous nature of firearms and the increased risk when in the hands of drug dealers. However, Justice Rosinski took into consideration White’s difficult upbringing and the Impact of Race and Cultural Assessment prepared for his sentencing.
The assessment highlighted White’s upbringing in low-income, crime-ridden communities, where two of his brothers were tragically murdered. His family was forced to relocate multiple times to escape violence, with their home being targeted by armed intruders on several occasions.
Despite his troubled past, White has managed to stay out of trouble since his conviction. He attributes his newfound sense of responsibility to his young child and another one on the way, stating that he wants to set a positive example for his family.
Justice Rosinski ultimately decided to hand down a suspended sentence, taking into account White’s efforts to turn his life around and avoid further criminal activity. This leniency serves as a second chance for White to make better choices and contribute positively to society.
