Colorado Republicans urge state to end Medicaid for illegal immigrants

Colorado congressional Republicans are urging the state to cease allowing illegal immigrants to enroll in the state’s Medicaid program, Health First Colorado. This initiative, which permits individuals in the country unlawfully to qualify for coverage if they meet other requirements, was implemented this year. In a letter addressed to Democratic Governor Jared Polis, representatives Gabe Evans, Jeff Crank, and Lauren Boebert proposed alterations to the existing policy.

The lawmakers highlighted that Colorado is one of seven states offering public healthcare coverage irrespective of one’s immigration status. However, they pointed out that states like California and Minnesota are revising their Medicaid offerings due to the associated costs and adverse impacts on American Medicaid beneficiaries. California, for instance, is contemplating options like an enrollment freeze as its legislature navigates budget negotiations.

Moreover, the reconciliation bill includes a provision penalizing states that provide coverage to illegal immigrants because Medicaid programs receive funds from federal and state taxpayers. With the likelihood of the Medicaid Federal Medical Assistance Percentage decreasing from 90% to 80% for states covering illegal immigrants, Colorado faces significant budgetary challenges if it continues this policy.

In response to the Republicans’ letter, a spokesperson for Governor Polis criticized the lawmakers for attempting to dismantle Medicaid and increase insurance costs for all individuals with private insurance. The spokesperson emphasized the potential consequences, such as nearly 400,000 Coloradans losing healthcare coverage and heightened costs for others. Governor Polis advocates for a complete overhaul of the reconciliation bill in the U.S. Senate to protect Medicaid and extend critical subsidies for those purchasing plans off the health exchange.

The ongoing debate underscores the complex issues surrounding healthcare coverage for illegal immigrants and the financial implications for states like Colorado. As policymakers grapple with balancing access to healthcare and fiscal responsibility, the future of Medicaid enrollment for undocumented individuals remains uncertain.
