Man charged with sexually assaulting teenage girl in Vancouver was on probation for previous sex assault

John Frederick Field, a repeat offender, was charged this week with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in a washroom. Shockingly, Field was on probation at the time of the offence for another sexual assault. This disturbing pattern of behavior is not new for the 62-year-old, as he has a long history of convictions dating back to his time as a young offender.

Court records reveal that Field was sentenced to three months in prison last September for a previous sexual assault. Despite being assessed for a possible dangerous or long-term offender application, Crown prosecutors chose not to pursue this designation, which would have seen him locked up indefinitely. This decision has now resulted in Field being back in custody, facing charges for a series of violent incidents that began with an attack on a 58-year-old woman and ended with the alleged sexual assault of a teenager in a bathroom.

Field’s previous court appearance in B.C. Supreme Court shed light on his troubled past. He has suffered a traumatic brain injury and has spent significant time in federal prisons. A forensic psychological assessment noted that Field has a personality disorder that is unlikely to change. His history of institutionalization and dislike of authority make him resistant to treatment and rehabilitation efforts.

The recent alleged assault was part of a “crime spree” that also included a bank robbery at an office building in Vancouver. The 58-year-old woman was attacked as she left a medical appointment, while the 14-year-old girl was sexually assaulted in a public washroom minutes later. Field managed to escape after the incidents but was apprehended shortly thereafter.

During his sentencing last year, the judge highlighted Field’s failure to learn from his previous convictions. Despite being on parole at the time of his latest offence, Field went on to commit another sexual assault. His disregard for court orders and repeated breaches of the law have raised concerns about the effectiveness of the justice system in dealing with repeat offenders.

B.C. Attorney General Niki Sharma expressed shock and concern about Field’s history as a repeat offender. She emphasized the need for changes to the Criminal Code to address individuals like Field who repeatedly show a lack of respect for the law. The Vancouver Police Department is urging anyone with information about the alleged incidents to come forward.

The tragic and disturbing case of John Frederick Field serves as a stark reminder of the challenges in dealing with individuals who pose a significant risk to society. As authorities work to address these issues, it is crucial to prioritize the safety and well-being of the community.
