At least 13 dead after devastating Texas flooding prompts evacuations

The National Guard was deployed in Texas on Friday following a tragic river flood that claimed the lives of over a dozen people and left dozens of children missing at a local Christian camp. The devastating flood was caused by heavy rain that led to the Guadalupe River rising nearly 30 feet in just 45 minutes.

Officials have confirmed that at least 13 people, including both adults and children, have lost their lives in the flood. At least 20 children who were attending Camp Mystic are still missing, according to Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick. The camp, which had over 750 attendees, is currently being evacuated via helicopter.

Heartbroken parents like Ellen Toranzo and Carrie Hanna are anxiously waiting for news of their missing daughters, Greta Toranzo and Hadley Hanna. Other nearby camps have reported that all children in their care are safe and accounted for.

Kerrville Mayor Joe Herring Jr. has issued a disaster declaration in response to the emergency evacuations taking place in the area. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has pledged to surge all available resources to respond to the flood, including water rescue teams, sheltering centers, the National Guard, and the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Senator Ted Cruz has taken to social media to ask for prayers for everyone affected by the flood, especially those at Camp Mystic. President Trump has also committed to providing any assistance that Texas may need in this time of crisis.

Despite the overwhelming situation, first responders are working tirelessly to rescue those in danger and provide aid to those affected by the flood. The Kerrville Public Utility Board outage map shows that nearly 3,000 people are currently without power in the area.
