Sen Risch: China, Russia, Iran pose security challenges to US in Africa

The Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Sen. He referred to these countries as ‘malign actors’ and stressed the need for the U.S. to counter their influence through partnerships with African states.
The Senator also discussed the role of the U.S. military in Africa, stating that its primary goal is to protect the American people and address serious security threats such as terrorism and regional conflicts. He expressed concerns about the spread of Islamist militants in Africa and called for increased efforts to combat this threat.
On the issue of Somalia, Risch advocated for a more effective counterterrorism approach that relies on partnerships with regional allies. He praised President Trump’s decisive actions against terrorist groups in Somalia, including recent airstrikes.
In Sudan, Risch condemned Russia and Iran for fueling the civil war that has resulted in a humanitarian disaster with thousands killed and millions displaced. He called for an end to the conflict and prevention of the partition of Sudan.
Regarding South Africa, Risch raised national security concerns about the country’s eligibility for trade benefits under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). He criticized the South African government’s posture and applauded the decision not to send U.S. representation to the G20 handover ceremony.
