Large industrial building destroyed after fire in Lower West Pubnico

A devastating fire broke out at Silver Roe Seafoods Ltd. in Lower West Pubnico, N.S., on Friday night, resulting in the complete destruction of the large industrial building. Devin d’Entremont, chief of the West Pubnico Fire Department, received the call at 7:40 p.m. AT and arrived at the scene within 10 minutes.

Upon arrival, d’Entremont described the scene as “fully involved” with thick, black smoke and sparking wires. The presence of three high-voltage transformers on site necessitated the intervention of Nova Scotia Power to shut off the electricity. Multiple fire departments were summoned to assist in extinguishing the flames, with crews working tirelessly until 12:40 a.m. Saturday.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, as d’Entremont confirmed that no individuals were inside the building at the time of the incident. Glenn Diggdon, a local resident, recounted how he noticed smoke while driving home and immediately alerted the fire department. He observed the fire rapidly spreading from the eastern corner of the building, with small explosions occurring shortly after his call.

Silver Roe Seafoods, a bait dealer and cold storage company, was the unfortunate site of the blaze. The company’s operations have been impacted by this tragic event, as the community comes together to support those affected by the loss.

The fire serves as a stark reminder of the importance of fire safety measures and preparedness in industrial settings. As investigations continue into the cause of the fire, the community remains united in its efforts to rebuild and recover from this devastating incident.
