Democrat Rep. Jahana Hayes projected to defeat GOP challenger for 2nd time in Connecticut
Democratic incumbent Rep. Jahana Hayes has secured another term representing Connecticut’s 5th Congressional District by defeating her Republican challenger, George Logan, according to the Associated Press.
This victory marks the second time that Hayes has bested Logan in an election. The Republican previously challenged Hayes during the 2022 midterm elections but was unsuccessful in unseating her.
Hayes has made history as the first Black woman and Black Democrat to represent Connecticut in Congress. Since winning her initial election in 2018, she has continued to solidify her position, winning re-election in both 2020 and now in 2022 by comfortable margins.
The 5th Congressional District of Connecticut has been reliably Democratic for the past 18 years, with Hayes continuing that trend with her latest victory. The district spans along Connecticut’s western border with New York.
Logan, a former Connecticut state Senator and long-time engineer at Aquarion Water Company, campaigned on promises to combat inflation, reduce gas prices through clean energy initiatives, support veterans, assist first responders, and enhance border security efforts.
In contrast, Hayes began her career as an educator in Connecticut before transitioning into politics. Throughout her time in Congress, she has served on the House Agriculture Committee and the House Committee on Education and the Workforce. Additionally, she is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus and the House Pro-Choice Caucus.
As the 5th Congressional District’s representative, Hayes has been vocal on various issues, including gun legislation, education, and healthcare. Her continued presence in Congress ensures that the residents of Connecticut have a strong voice advocating for their needs and concerns.
