Canadian Taylor Swift Fan Upset After Calgary Airport Confiscates Beads for Friendship Bracelets
A Canadian Taylor Swift fan had a frustrating experience at the Calgary International Airport when security staff confiscated her beads worth hundreds of dollars, which she planned to use for making friendship bracelets.
Friendship bracelets are a popular tradition among ‘Swifties’ at Taylor Swift concerts worldwide, inspired by a lyric from her album Midnights.
During her journey from Vancouver to Toronto for one of The Eras Tour concerts, Caitlynne Medrek faced a setback during her layover in Calgary.
Medrek mentioned that while her carry-on bag passed security in Vancouver without any issues, she encountered a problem during screening in Calgary.
According to Medrek, airport staff informed her that she had exceeded the allowable bead limit and could not bring the crafting supplies on the plane.
Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) guidelines state that solid beads in quantities less than 350 ml are allowed in carry-on baggage, while quantities of 350 ml or more are permitted “subject to visual inspection.”
Despite having more than 350 ml of beads, Medrek had them stored in a transparent container to comply with the regulations.
She expressed surprise at the inconsistency in enforcement between Vancouver and Calgary airports, as she knew friends who had taken larger quantities of beads on flights without any issues.
CATSA mentioned that certain materials, such as inorganic bead material, may require additional screening and could be prohibited on flights.
The agency stated that without an official complaint from Medrek, they could not provide further details on the incident.
Medrek has not yet filed a complaint but expressed her disappointment at the situation, questioning the interpretation of the rules by airport staff.
Despite the setback, she remains a loyal Taylor Swift fan and plans to continue making friendship bracelets for future concerts.
