Matt Gaetz ‘working the phones,’ speaking to GOP senators despite difficult confirmation odds

Former Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, who President-elect Trump announced as his selection to be attorney general during his second term, is wasting no time in reaching out to Senate Republicans ahead of his confirmation hearing next year. Gaetz has been actively making calls to GOP senators in an effort to secure their support for his nomination to lead the Department of Justice (DOJ).

According to several GOP senators, they have had conversations with Gaetz over the phone since Trump picked him for the position. One senator, Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma, confirmed that he had spoken with Gaetz recently, describing their conversation as brief. While Mullin and Gaetz have had a tense relationship in the past, the former congressman is determined to win over senators for his nomination.

Gaetz has faced allegations in the past, including claims of sexual misconduct and illicit drug use. These allegations were part of a yearlong investigation by the DOJ, which ultimately decided not to press any charges against him. Despite the controversy surrounding him, Gaetz is focused on clearing his name and proving his qualifications for the role of attorney general.

Other Republican senators, such as Josh Hawley of Missouri and John Kennedy of Louisiana, have also had conversations with Gaetz about his nomination. Hawley expressed support for a confirmation hearing to allow Gaetz to address the allegations and share his plans for the DOJ. Kennedy assured Gaetz that he would receive a fair shake in the Senate and encouraged him to be forthcoming in his responses.

Vice President-elect JD Vance is also playing a role in promoting Gaetz’s nomination, scheduling meetings with key Republican senators to advocate for his confirmation. The incoming administration is moving quickly to ensure that key nominees are confirmed and ready to start delivering for the American people.

Despite the efforts to garner support for Gaetz’s nomination, he faces an uphill battle in the Senate. With a slim majority, it would only take a few Republican votes to deny his confirmation. Some GOP senators have already expressed doubts about Gaetz’s ability to secure the necessary votes for confirmation.

As the confirmation process unfolds, Gaetz remains focused on making his case to senators and addressing any concerns they may have. His determination to lead the DOJ and his commitment to serving the American people will be key factors in determining his fate as attorney general.
