Teen charged after allegedly threatening to bring weapons to Halifax high school

Halifax police have taken swift action after a 16-year-old boy was charged with making threats to bring weapons to Citadel High School. The incident led to the boy’s arrest at his home in Halifax early Wednesday morning, where a number of weapons were seized by authorities.

The teenager is now facing serious charges including possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of a prohibited weapon without a license, two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and uttering threats. The Halifax Regional Police Chief, Don MacLean, is set to address the media about the case at 1:30 p.m. local time, with CBC News livestreaming the conference for public viewing.

Due to the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the boy’s identity is protected as he is scheduled to appear in youth justice court on Thursday. In response to the incident, Halifax Regional Police have committed to having a presence at Citadel High School on Thursday to provide support to students and staff.

Fortunately, investigators have determined that there is no ongoing threat to the school and do not suspect anyone else to be involved in the situation. The Halifax Regional Centre for Education (HRCE) released a statement affirming that police alerted Citadel High School administrators about the potential threat on Wednesday and reassured the community that the safety of students and staff remains their top priority.

Citadel High School, situated on Trollope Street in downtown Halifax, is home to a student population of 1,530. The school’s counselors are available to students seeking assistance during this challenging time. Police have emphasized that the investigation is still ongoing and complex, underscoring the seriousness with which they are treating this matter.
