Texas police officer, an Army vet, killed in line of duty during car chase

A Texas police sergeant and Army veteran, Sgt. Mark Butler, has tragically lost his life while on duty, but his heroism and sacrifice are being hailed by many as preventing even more tragedy. Sgt. Butler was killed in a head-on collision during a pursuit of a suspect wanted for attempting to cash a fake check. The incident began when the College Station Police Department responded to a forgery in progress at Prosperity Bank.

According to reports, officers approached the female suspect who was trying to cash a fraudulent check, but she fled in a black Jeep Wrangler. Troopers were dispatched as the suspect was reported to be traveling in the wrong direction on Highway 6 in Navasota, 24 miles outside College Station. Sgt. Butler, traveling north, maneuvered his patrol vehicle and collided with the suspect, preventing her from hitting other motorists on the highway.

Despite his heroic efforts, Sgt. Butler succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. The suspect, whose identity has not been released, was also pronounced dead at the crash site. A Bryan, Texas family who witnessed the incident praised Sgt. Butler for his selfless act, stating that he saved their lives and the lives of others on the road.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is leading the investigation into the crash, while the College Station Police Department is assisting with the forgery incident. Colleagues and community members have expressed their condolences and deep sadness over the loss of Sgt. Butler, a dedicated officer who served with the Navasota Police Department for almost four years.
