Officials Provide Update on Annapolis County Wildfire
Recent updates from provincial government officials and firefighters shed light on the ongoing battle against the Annapolis County Wildfire, which continues to pose a significant threat.
Despite the fire remaining active, the combination of cooler weather conditions and shorter days has instilled a sense of optimism among officials. The devastating impact of the fire has already led to the displacement of hundreds of residents and the destruction of numerous homes and structures.
While the loss of 20 houses and 11 buildings is tragic, fire staff from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) are grateful that the toll was not higher. Dave Rockwood, the provincial fire brigade and GSAR coordinator, expressed his astonishment at the resilience of some structures amidst the ferocity of the flames.
The most intense day of the fire, which occurred on August 24, saw unprecedented fire behavior as hurricane-force winds fueled its rapid spread. The heroic efforts of firefighters, who braved 200-foot flames and employed innovative strategies such as setting up sprinklers and creating fire breaks, helped mitigate further damage.
“We looked at flames of 200 feet peak over the ridge,” said Rockwood. “To be honest, it is amazing that there are still structures with the fireworks we have seen.”
The scale of the operation to protect structures was unparalleled in Nova Scotia’s history, with crews working tirelessly to safeguard homes using sprinklers and strategic water deployment. The collaborative efforts of provincial and municipal authorities, supported by meteorological insights, played a crucial role in coordinating the firefighting efforts.
