The Manitoba government is promising $10 million more to fight crime and improve inner-city safety

WINNIPEG – The Manitoba government is pledging another $10 million to curb crime and improve security in downtown Winnipeg.

Some of the money will be used for dozens of closed-circuit security cameras and more police vehicles, including non-motorized small vehicles that can go where cars can’t.

According to recent statistics from the Winnipeg Police Department, last year’s crime was 17 percent above the previous five-year average.

The Progressive Conservative government has made a series of crime-fighting announcements ahead of provincial elections scheduled for October.

Prime Minister Heather Stefanson says the government wants to defend, not antagonize, the police.

Opposition leader Wab Kinew, NDP leader, has rejected Tory allegations that he would cut police spending.
