Trans airmen, Space Force personnel have until March 26 to resign under Trump order: Memo

The Pentagon has issued a memo urging transgender military personnel in the Air Force and Space Force to “separate voluntarily” by the end of the month. The memo states that individuals with gender dysphoria are considered “incompatible with the high mental and physical standards necessary for military service.” Troops have until March 26 to resign, according to a memorandum filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia as part of Talbott v. Trump.

Service members who are eligible for voluntary separation pay will be compensated at a rate twice the amount for which they would have been eligible under involuntary separation pay. The memo, signed by Acting Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Manpower and Reserve Affairs Gwendolyn R. DeFilippi, emphasizes the need for transgender service members to adhere to conduct matching their biological sex until their withdrawal is complete.

Cross-sex hormone treatments will continue for service members diagnosed with gender dysphoria that began prior to the recent memo until their separation is finalized by a Department of Defense medical provider. The memo also states that physical dress and fitness standards must align with service members’ biological sex during this period.

Last week, an internal Pentagon memo declared that transgender service members or those exhibiting gender dysphoria are prohibited from military service unless they obtain an exemption. The Trump administration’s transgender military ban is currently facing legal challenges, with the Justice Department filing a complaint against the presiding judge, Ana Reyes, alleging potential bias and misconduct.

Attorney Jennifer Levi of GLAD Law expressed concern over the Air Force memo, calling it a “purge of highly accomplished, dedicated transgender service members” that undermines national security. The memo highlights the chaos and havoc caused by the administration’s policies regarding transgender individuals serving in the military.

As the situation continues to unfold, legal challenges to Trump’s executive orders on transgender military service are ongoing. The latest memo requiring transgender military personnel in the Air Force and Space Force to voluntarily separate by March 26 underscores the contentious and evolving nature of this issue.
