Trudeau’s final weeks strike balance between cementing his legacy and managing a crisis
As Prime Minister Justin Trudeau nears the end of his tenure, he and his government are working diligently to solidify his political legacy. Trudeau has been busy making significant announcements on infrastructure, social programs, and reconciliation efforts.
One of the key focuses of Trudeau’s legacy has been Indigenous reconciliation. Over the past decade, he has made strides in renewing the relationship with Indigenous Peoples, including delivering apologies for past policies and lifting drinking water advisories in Indigenous communities. Recently, Trudeau signed an agreement with the Haida Nation, recognizing Aboriginal title over Haida Gwaii, and struck a $270-million deal to support jobs and conservation projects in Nunavut.
Trudeau has also been actively demonstrating Canada’s support for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s invasion. Canada has provided nearly $20 billion in military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine and imposed sanctions on those involved in the conflict. Trudeau has visited Ukraine multiple times to voice Canada’s unwavering support for the country and its president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
In terms of social programs, Trudeau’s government has been working to expand child care and pharmacare initiatives. A $37-billion deal has been reached with provinces and territories to extend the child care program until 2031, creating an additional 100,000 spaces. The pharmacare plan, passed by Parliament last year, is gaining traction with Manitoba, B.C., and Prince Edward Island signing on to receive federal funding.
Additionally, Trudeau has launched a high-speed rail project connecting Quebec City and Toronto, aiming to bring all-electric trains reaching speeds of up to 300 km/hour. The ambitious project, estimated to cost $3.9 billion for design and development, highlights Trudeau’s commitment to investing in infrastructure for the future.
As Trudeau wraps up his time in office, these initiatives serve to solidify his legacy and leave a lasting impact on Canada’s social, economic, and environmental landscape. Moving forward, future governments will have a strong foundation to build upon and continue the work started by Trudeau’s administration.
