Trump expected to ‘soon’ appoint a Ukrainian peace envoy after promises of negotiating end to war with Russia
President-elect Trump to Appoint Ukrainian Peace Envoy to Lead Negotiations with Russia
President-elect Donald Trump is expected to soon appoint a Ukrainian peace envoy to lead negotiations on ending the war with Russia, according to multiple sources. The envoy, who will be a senior official with credibility, will be tasked with finding a resolution and achieving a peace settlement in the region.
The role is anticipated to be a voluntary position, similar to Kurt Volker’s service as a special representative to Ukrainian negotiations from 2017 to 2019.
Trump’s Cabinet Picks Reflect a Stance of Engagement
As Trump continues to announce his Cabinet appointments, he has selected Rep. Michael Waltz, R-Fla., as his national security advisor and is reportedly considering Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., to lead the State Department. Additionally, Steven Witkoff has been designated as Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East.
Trump has long expressed his belief in his ability to negotiate an end to the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. While specifics of his strategy remain unclear, reports suggest that some advisers are urging him to pursue terms that include creating a demilitarized zone along the frontlines and allowing Russia to retain the territory it has annexed.
Trump Urges Restraint in Communication with Putin
Last week, The Wall Street Journal reported that Vice President-elect Vance’s controversial proposals from the campaign trail are being advocated by several close advisers to Trump. Additionally, a recent Washington Post article claimed that Trump had conversed with Russian President Vladimir Putin, advising him to avoid escalating the conflict in Ukraine.
While Trump’s transition team neither confirmed nor denied the alleged conversation, the appointment of a Ukrainian peace envoy underscores the administration’s commitment to resolving the ongoing crisis in the region.
