US Election 2024

Trump hints he’d back longtime critic’s bid to flip Dem Senate seat in 2026

Former New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu and former President Donald Trump seem to have put their past differences aside, with Trump now expressing his full support for Sununu should he decide to run for the Senate in 2026. Sununu, who completed his final term as governor in January, is considering a bid for the Senate seat currently held by Democrat Jeanne Shaheen.

In a recent interview with Fox News Digital, Sununu mentioned that he is in the process of making a decision regarding a 2026 Senate campaign and emphasized that he believes he would have the president’s backing if he chooses to run. Trump confirmed this sentiment, stating that he met with Sununu recently at the White House and fully supports his potential Senate bid.

Despite their previous disagreements, Sununu had supported Trump during the 2016 and 2020 elections. However, he did push back against Trump’s claims of election fraud in the 2020 election. Sununu’s criticism of Trump led to tensions between the two, with Trump referring to Sununu as a “spoiled brat” and a “nasty guy.” Nonetheless, as the 2024 election approached, Sununu expressed his intention to vote for the Republican nominee.

While Sununu had previously stated that he would not run for the Senate in 2026, he has now indicated that the possibility is open, although not extensively. Sununu, who has received high approval ratings during his time as governor, is seen as a strong contender for the Republican nomination. However, he may face competition from former Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown, who is also considering a Senate bid in New Hampshire.

On the Democratic side, Rep. Chris Pappas has formally announced his candidacy for the Senate seat, highlighting issues such as Social Security cuts and Medicaid reductions. Additionally, Rep. Maggie Goodlander is reportedly contemplating a Senate run, potentially setting up a competitive primary race within the Democratic party.

As the political landscape in New Hampshire continues to evolve, the potential Senate race in 2026 promises to be a closely watched and highly contested affair. With Sununu and Trump seemingly reconciled and gearing up for a possible collaboration, the dynamics of the race are sure to be intriguing.
