Trump inauguration: DC police chief expecting ‘4,000 police officers to assist us’

An estimated 4,000 additional police officers are expected to be on hand in Washington, D.C., in January for the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, according to Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela Smith. Smith stated that her agency has been diligently planning for the inauguration since the mid-summer, reaching out to police agencies across the United States for support. She mentioned that the majority of agencies have been very supportive, with hopes of reaching the goal of 4,000 officers to assist in the process.

Smith also highlighted the collaboration with local partners such as DC Fire and EMS, as well as the Office of Unified Communications, on a regular basis. In addition, her department has been meeting bi-weekly with federal partners to stay updated on intelligence information that may arise not only in D.C. but across the country. This preparation is crucial as the certification of the election results is set for Jan. 6, 2025, followed by the inauguration on Jan. 20.

The U.S. Secret Service has designated the “2025 Counting and Certification of Electoral Votes” as a National Special Security Event, emphasizing the importance of thorough security measures. Eric Ranaghan, the Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Secret Service’s Dignitary Protective Division, emphasized the commitment to developing a comprehensive security plan to ensure the safety of the event and its participants.

As the inauguration approaches, it is essential for law enforcement agencies to work together seamlessly to maintain order and security during this significant event. With the collaborative efforts of various police agencies and federal partners, the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump is expected to proceed smoothly and safely.
