TSA officer reportedly caught with firearm in busy Atlanta airport is arrested

A TSA officer was recently arrested at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport for carrying a firearm beyond the security checkpoint. The officer, identified as 58-year-old Matthew Gilbert, was charged with reckless conduct. It remains unclear why Gilbert was allegedly carrying a firearm in the secure area.
According to Atlanta police, Gilbert was taken to Clayton County Jail but has since been released. This incident is not isolated, as several airport employees have been caught carrying firearms in prohibited areas.
“We do not want guns in the secured area of the airport,” said Capt. Toya Young of Atlanta Police. “Prior to entering the secured area, you’re free to carry, but once you’re inside, it is against the law to have a firearm.”
The TSA website reveals that Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport leads the nation in confiscated firearms, with 440 guns intercepted in a single year. In total, the agency intercepted over 6,670 firearms in 2024.
TSA Administrator David Pekoske emphasized the dangers of firearms at checkpoints, stating, “One firearm at a checkpoint is too many. Firearms pose a safety risk for our employees and everyone else. It’s also costly and slows down operations.”
For travelers who need to transport firearms, the TSA provides clear guidelines on how to do so legally. However, there are limited exceptions for law enforcement officers.
In response to the incident, a TSA spokesperson stated, “TSA has zero tolerance for misconduct on or off duty. The officer involved has been removed from screening status and placed on leave pending further action. Passenger and employee safety is our top priority.”
Fox News Digital reached out to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport for comment but has not received a response yet.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of following regulations and ensuring the safety of all individuals at airports. It is crucial for airport employees to adhere to security protocols to maintain a secure environment for travelers.
