UPDATED: Woman dead, 10 others displaced after house fire in Digby County
GROSSES COQUES, NS — A 47-year-old woman has died and 10 others have been displaced by a devastating morning fire in Digby County.
The Canadian Red Cross said the fire on Highway 1 in Grosses Coques started about 10 a.m. Wednesday and destroyed a two-story home in the Acadian community.
RCMP said responding officers at the scene learned that one person was missing and believed to be in the house.
After the fire was extinguished, a woman was found dead inside.
The Red Cross said all 10 people displaced by the fire are staying with other relatives and friends in the area.
They are assisted by Red Cross volunteers from Yarmouth with emergency supplies such as food, clothing and other essential needs.
Volunteer firefighters from St. Bernard and numerous other neighboring fire departments came to the blaze.
The RCMP informed the public during the day on Wednesday that there was a two-mile road closure in both directions during the blaze to allow first responders to do their jobs safely.
The fire is not suspicious, according to police.
