Upper Hammonds Plains welcomes new cooperative housing development

New Affordable Homes Development Announced in Upper Hammonds Plains

The federal government has recently announced the development of 136 new affordable homes in Upper Hammonds Plains. This project, known as the Upper Hammonds Plains Housing Coöperative, is a part of the cooperative housing development program and is considered the largest federal investment in new co-op housing in over 30 years, with $1.5 billion in financing.

Located at 195 Equestrian Lane, the Upper Hammonds Plains Housing Coöperative aims to preserve and enhance African Nova Scotia culture while providing safe and affordable housing options for residents.

Curtis, founder and president of the Upper Hammonds Plains Community Land Trust, expressed his excitement about the project, stating, “This pioneering initiative demonstrates the power of community-led initiatives in delivering transformational projects and non-market homes that will remain affordable for generations to come. By involving residents in the decision-making process, we are ensuring that the community has a say in its future.”

Accessibility and Affordability

Halifax mayor Andy Fillmore highlighted that the cooperative will include 29 fully accessible units, catering to individuals with diverse needs. The project has received over $61 million in financing from the federal government, emphasizing the importance of providing affordable housing options for Canadians.

Braedon Clark, member of parliament for Sackville-Bedford-Preston, praised the cooperative model for offering affordable, inclusive, and sustainable housing solutions tailored to local requirements. The cooperative is set to be completed by the spring of 2027, providing much-needed housing options in the community.
