US Coast Guard, NYPD recovery efforts in progress near Staten Island after boat capsized with six people onboard
A search is currently underway for a missing person near the New York coast after a tragic boating accident that occurred on Sunday. The incident involved a boat carrying six people which ultimately capsized, resulting in three fatalities and two individuals being hospitalized.
The U.S. Coast Guard, along with the New York City police and fire departments, are actively participating in recovery efforts to locate the missing boater. The distress call was received by Coast Guard officials at 12:04 p.m. from New York City 911 operators reporting a boat in distress near Breezy Point.
In response, three rescue boats and an MH65 Helicopter were dispatched to the scene to aid in the rescue operation alongside Sandy Hook Pilots and the New York Police Department’s Aviation Unit. Despite their efforts, only five individuals were successfully recovered and transported to safety.
Of the five rescued individuals, two were airlifted to Staten Island University Hospital while the remaining three were taken to the Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook. Unfortunately, four of the boaters were unresponsive and despite CPR efforts, three of them were pronounced dead. One person remains in critical condition while another is in stable condition.
The identities of the boaters involved in the incident have not yet been disclosed as of early Monday morning. Additionally, authorities have confirmed that a sixth individual is still missing in the water following the boat capsizing. The FDNY is actively involved in the search and rescue mission to locate the missing person.
An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the boating accident and what led to the vessel capsizing. The tragic incident has left the community in shock and mourning for the lives lost in the accident.
