US releasing Russian prisoner as part of Marc Fogel deal, Kremlin says

The United States has successfully secured the release of American teacher Marc Fogel, who had been detained in Russia since 2021. As part of the deal, an unidentified Russian prisoner will also be released and returned to Russia in the coming days, the Kremlin announced on Wednesday.

Fogel, a history teacher from Pennsylvania, was serving a 14-year prison sentence in Russia after his arrest in August 2021 for allegedly possessing drugs. His family and supporters argued that the drugs were medically prescribed marijuana. After his release, Fogel was flown back to the U.S. and landed late last night.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the Russian prisoner’s identity will be disclosed upon his return to Russia. Peskov mentioned in a conference call with reporters that intense work and contacts between relevant agencies led to the release of Fogel and the Russian prisoner.

Upon his return to the U.S., Fogel met with President Donald Trump at the White House, where he expressed his gratitude and called Trump a hero for securing his release. Fogel also praised the diplomatic service personnel and lawmakers who played a role in his return.

Fogel’s sister, Anne Fogel, expressed immense relief and gratitude for her brother’s release, stating that the situation had taken a toll on their family. She thanked President Trump and all those involved in securing Fogel’s freedom.

President Trump, when asked by reporters if the U.S. had given up anything in exchange for Fogel’s release, simply replied, “not much,” without providing further details.

The State Department has not yet responded to requests for comments on the matter. Fogel’s release marks a significant moment for his family and supporters, who have been advocating for his return since his arrest in Russia.

The successful negotiation for Fogel’s release highlights the importance of diplomatic efforts in resolving international disputes and securing the freedom of individuals held captive in foreign countries. The collaboration between the U.S. and Russia in this case serves as a positive example of diplomatic cooperation in the interest of justice and human rights.

The return of Marc Fogel to the U.S. is a moment of celebration for his loved ones and a testament to the power of perseverance and diplomacy in achieving justice and freedom. The collaborative effort that led to his release is a reminder of the importance of international cooperation in resolving conflicts and ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals around the world.
