Vance visits Capitol Hill to urge senators to confirm Elbridge Colby for Pentagon No. 3 post

Vice President JD Vance recently made a visit to Capitol Hill to show his support for his close friend Elbridge “Bridge” Colby, who is President Donald Trump’s controversial nominee for the Pentagon’s No. 3 spot, undersecretary of defense for policy. Vance spoke at Colby’s confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee, praising him for his foresight and ability to predict future challenges.

“In so many ways, Bridge predicted what we would be talking about four years down the road, five years down the road, 10 years down the road. He saw around corners that very few other people were seeing around,” Vance stated in his opening remarks. He emphasized that Colby has a long career in defense policy where he has expressed views that have both alienated and united Democrats and Republicans.

Vance described Colby as a “good man” and an “honest man,” highlighting the importance of having individuals who are willing to speak the truth even when it may be difficult to hear. The Vice President’s presence at the confirmation hearing underscored the White House’s commitment to securing support for Colby, whose more restrained views have raised concerns among some senators.

Colby, in his own remarks, acknowledged the real risk of major war and expressed his hope for peaceful resolutions that strengthen alliances and national security. He emphasized his willingness to engage with differing viewpoints and adapt his views based on persuasive arguments.

During the hearing, Colby addressed questions about his stance on defending Taiwan and the importance of the U.S.’ military readiness. He also fielded inquiries about Russia, Ukraine, and the broader geopolitical landscape. Despite facing some skepticism and concerns from lawmakers, Colby reiterated his commitment to putting America’s interests first and ensuring a strong national defense posture.

Colby’s nomination has faced some opposition from Iran hawks and certain senators, including Sen. Tom Cotton, who have expressed reservations. However, Colby’s track record at the Pentagon and his role in shaping the U.S. National Security Strategy have earned him recognition for his strategic thinking and focus on addressing emerging threats.

As the confirmation process continues, Colby remains steadfast in his belief that the U.S. must prioritize its resources and attention on countering threats from China while maintaining a strong defense posture in other regions. His vision for a more secure and resilient America resonates with key stakeholders and underscores the importance of having experienced leaders in critical national security positions.
