Virginia’s Youngkin endorses Winsome Earle-Sears for governor
Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin has officially endorsed Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears as his preferred candidate for governor in the upcoming November 2025 election. Both Youngkin and Sears are members of the Republican Party, and this endorsement is seen as a significant development in the state’s political landscape.
Governor Youngkin, who assumed office in early 2022, is unable to seek re-election due to the state constitution’s limitation on consecutive terms for governors. As such, the 2025 gubernatorial race will be a pivotal one, especially following former President Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 election.
In addition to Winsome Earle-Sears, Merle Rutledge has also thrown his hat into the ring as a Republican candidate for governor. On the Democratic side, Representative Abigail Spanberger is vying for the nomination.
Youngkin praised Sears in his social media posts, citing her outstanding performance as Lieutenant Governor and her unwavering commitment to conservative principles, military and veterans’ issues, educational freedom, and economic opportunity. He commended her fighting spirit and dedication to serving the people of Virginia.
In response to Youngkin’s endorsement, Sears expressed deep gratitude for his support and vowed to continue building on the accomplishments of his administration.
Meanwhile, Rep. Abigail Spanberger made headlines for her strong criticism of former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard after Trump nominated her to serve as director of national intelligence. Spanberger, a former CIA case officer, denounced the nomination, expressing concern over Gabbard’s suitability for the role.
Gabbard, who previously served as a Democrat in the House of Representatives, recently switched parties and joined the GOP.
Governor Youngkin also threw his support behind Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares for re-election, citing Miyares’ dedication to upholding the laws of the Commonwealth, supporting law enforcement, combating drug trafficking, and advocating for victims of human trafficking and domestic violence.
The upcoming 2025 gubernatorial race in Virginia promises to be a fiercely contested battle, with high stakes for both parties. Youngkin’s endorsement of Winsome Earle-Sears underscores the importance of party unity and the need for strong leadership in the state’s highest office.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, Virginians will be closely watching the candidates as they present their visions for the future of the Commonwealth. The race is sure to be one of the most closely watched contests in the nation, with implications that extend far beyond the state’s borders.
