Progressive Democrats Speak Out Against Antisemitism Following Terrorist Attack in Boulder, Colorado

Progressive Democrats are speaking out against antisemitism in the wake of a horrific terrorist attack in Boulder, Colorado. The attack, carried out by an Egyptian national, involved setting peaceful protesters on fire at a demonstration to bring Israeli hostages home. The incident has sparked outrage and condemnation from several prominent Democratic lawmakers.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a progressive Democrat and potential 2028 presidential candidate, expressed her horror at the attack, stating, “My heart is with the victims and our Jewish communities across the country. Antisemitism is on the rise here at home, and we have a moral responsibility to confront and stop it everywhere it exists.”

Rep. Ilhan Omar, who has faced criticism for alleged antisemitic comments in the past, also condemned the violence, emphasizing that “Violence against anyone is never acceptable. We must reject hatred and harm in all its forms.”

While Rep. Omar’s censure resolution did not pass, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, another member of the “Squad,” was censured in 2023 for alleged anti-Israel comments. Tlaib expressed her condolences for the victims of the attack, stating that “Violence has no place in our communities.”

Newly elected progressive Democrats, Rep. Greg Casar of Texas and Rep. Delia C. Ramirez of Illinois, also condemned the antisemitic attack, emphasizing the need to reject all forms of hate and violence. Rep. Maxwell Frost, the first Gen-Z congressman, admitted his regret for not supporting a resolution condemning antisemitism on college campuses in 2023 and joined his colleagues in denouncing the attack.

Rep. Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, a member of the original “Squad,” described the attack as “horrifying and unacceptable,” calling for unity in rooting out violence and injustice. She also criticized President Donald Trump’s immigration policies, urging support for immigrant communities.

However, Rep. Summer Lee of Pennsylvania, another member of the “Squad,” has not yet publicly condemned the attack. Her office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The progressive Democrats’ unified stance against antisemitism underscores the importance of confronting hatred and violence in all its forms. In a time of heightened tensions, it is crucial for leaders to speak out against bigotry and discrimination, and to work towards creating a more inclusive and peaceful society.
