US Election 2024

Where President Donald Trump stands with Americans 11 weeks into his second term

President Donald Trump is showing no signs of slowing down as he enters the 11th week of his second administration. With a record-breaking 111 executive orders signed since his inauguration on Jan. 20, Trump is expanding the powers of the presidency and upending long-standing government policies.

While the president continues to boast about his accomplishments, recent national public opinion polls suggest that Americans may not be as pleased with his performance. In a Reuters/Ipsos survey conducted from March 31-April 2, Trump’s approval rating stands at 43%, with a disapproval rating of 53%. Similarly, a Wall Street Journal poll conducted from March 27-April 1 shows Trump with a 46%-51% approval-disapproval rating.

Despite these numbers, a survey from the Daily Mail indicates that Trump’s approval rating is in positive territory. However, the majority of national public opinion surveys conducted since mid-March show Trump in negative territory.

Trump’s approval ratings have seen a slight decline since the start of his second term, with concerns over the economy and inflation contributing to the slide. The president’s handling of the economy has only garnered a 37% approval rating in the Reuters/Ipsos poll, and a 44% approval rating in the Wall Street Journal poll.

Political experts believe that Trump has been losing the argument that tariffs are part of a larger economic plan to bring down prices. Daron Shaw, a politics professor at the University of Texas, notes that Trump needs to make a stronger case for his economic policies to regain public support.

One issue where Trump is still in positive territory is immigration and border security. However, Shaw believes that Trump’s success in this area has led to a decrease in its importance as a top issue for voters.

Despite the decline in his poll numbers, Trump’s ratings are still higher than they were at any point during his first term in office. Veteran Republican pollster Neil Newhouse points out that Trump’s Republican base remains strongly supportive of him, which was not the case at the beginning of his first term.

Overall, Trump’s second term is off to a rocky start, with mixed public opinion and concerns over the economy. As the president continues to push forward with his agenda, it remains to be seen how his policies will impact his approval ratings in the coming weeks.
