White House slams Smithsonian exhibit for ‘undermining’ American story

The Trump administration has set its sights on the Smithsonian Institution, alleging that the federally-funded museum complex is promoting “one-sided, divisive political narratives” that do not uphold the greatness of the American story. White House official Lindsey Halligan criticized the current content on display at the National Museum of American History’s Entertainment Nation exhibit in an email to Fox News Digital.

Halligan stated, “American taxpayers should not be funding institutions that undermine our country or promote one-sided, divisive political narratives.” The White House is calling for the Smithsonian Institution to present history in a manner that is accurate, balanced, and in line with the values that make the United States exceptional.

The Entertainment Nation exhibit has faced criticism for its politically-charged interpretation of cultural milestones. Display placards have been called out for framing American culture as violent, imperialist, or racist. For example, the exhibit reinterprets iconic American characters such as Mickey Mouse and The Lone Ranger through a critical lens, suggesting that they embody negative aspects of American history.

The White House has announced a top-to-bottom content review of the Smithsonian museums, with input from senior leaders and the Board of Regents. The goal is to ensure that the content honors America’s founding principles, celebrates American heroes, and does not promote fringe ideologies disguised as history.

The Smithsonian Institution has responded by stating that it is committed to rigorous scholarship, research, and unbiased presentation of facts and history. The museum is currently assessing its content and will make necessary changes to align with its standards.

President Donald Trump issued an executive order in March directing the Board of Regents to eliminate divisive or anti-American ideologies from Smithsonian museums. The controversy surrounding the Entertainment Nation exhibit is part of a larger effort by the administration to reshape cultural institutions that are perceived as leaning too far left.

The exhibit, which opened in December 2022, explores the intersection of popular culture and American identity. However, the Trump administration argues that it uses culture to push ideology that contradicts American values.

As the review of Smithsonian content continues, the administration is pushing for a museum that inspires national pride, tells the truth, and reflects the greatness of the country. The goal is to ensure that the Smithsonian remains a beacon of American history and culture, free from divisive political narratives.
