Caitlin Clark’s coach suggests star offered to pay fine for technical foul

Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White received a technical foul and a fine during Thursday’s game against the Las Vegas Aces for yelling at WNBA referees. However, what made headlines was the revelation that star player Caitlin Clark offered to pay the fine on behalf of her coach.
The incident occurred in the fourth quarter with just over five minutes left, as White was passionately addressing the officials during an Indiana possession. The Fever were leading the Aces by 23 points when the referee signaled for a technical foul on the coach. Clark, who was sidelined due to a groin injury, showed her support by jumping up and clapping for her coach during the heated moment.
After the game, White shared with reporters that Clark had volunteered to cover the fine. “I don’t know about frustrations boiling as more to just like making a point,” White explained. “Caitlin said she got me, though. She just got a bonus.”
This incident comes amidst a season where the Fever have adopted a more rebellious tone in team culture. The team recently clinched the WNBA’s Commissioner’s Cup with a victory over the Minnesota Lynx, celebrating with champagne and vodka seltzers in the locker room. Clark, who couldn’t play due to her injury, even took a shot during the festivities, exclaiming, “I just know everybody in the league is sick.”
The celebration also shed light on the prize money for the Commissioner’s Cup, with Clark pointing out that the winning team receives more than the WNBA Finals champions. She humorously suggested reaching out to WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert for a revision in the prize distribution.
Additionally, Fever newcomer Sophie Cunningham, who gained popularity after defending Clark in a physical altercation with the Connecticut Sun players, expressed a sense of camaraderie within the team. Despite facing distractions and injuries, Cunningham emphasized the importance of unity and resilience to overcome adversity.
As the Fever navigate through a challenging season, characterized by injuries and external pressures, the team remains focused on staying disciplined, united, and competitive. With a strong sense of camaraderie and determination, the Fever are prepared to face any obstacles that come their way and continue striving for success on the court.
