Nova Scotia Wildfire is growing, while firefighters in Newfoundland helped with cooler temperatures

Forest Fires Continue to Wreak Havoc in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador

The natural fire in the western part of Nova Scotia has continued to grow, prompting officials to urge people to evacuate their homes. Fortunately, cooler temperatures and low winds have aided firefighters in Newfoundland and Labrador in their efforts to contain the blazes.

According to Scott Tingley, manager of forest protection at the Natural Resources department of Nova Scotia, the Longkamer lake fire is expected to expand further. The fire nearly doubled in size, reaching almost 20 square kilometers from 11 square kilometers in the morning. It has spread along Godfrey Lake, posing a threat to the surrounding areas.

Despite the significant growth of the fire, there have been no reports of structural damage so far. Tingley emphasized the challenging conditions faced by firefighters, stating, “These are not favorable firefighting conditions. It is very, very dry.”

To combat the wildfires, two contracted helicopters have been assisting local firefighters, along with crews from Prince Edward Island and Ontario. Additionally, Environment Canada has forecasted up to 15 millimeters of rain for Sunday evening, which could provide some relief to the affected areas.

Meanwhile, in Newfoundland and Labrador, the largest natural fire along the northwestern coast of Conception Bay continues to burn stubbornly at 95 square kilometers, destroying approximately 100 homes and displacing 3,000 people. Crews are working tirelessly to contain the blaze, with cooler temperatures and light winds offering hope for successful suppression efforts.

Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his gratitude to the Canadian Armed Forces for their efforts in combating the forest fires, acknowledging the risks they undertake to keep Canadians safe.
