Winnipeg couple charged with killing animals also discussed intent to torture a child, police allege

A horrifying case of animal cruelty in Winnipeg has taken a dark turn, as a couple now faces charges of bestiality, child pornography offences, and planning to torture a child. Chad Kabecz, 40, and Irene Lima, 55, were initially arrested on Oct. 9 after a police search of their home in the Lord Roberts area. The charges against them include killing or injuring animals and causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.

During the investigation, police seized electronic devices that contained hundreds of videos and photographs, as well as tens of thousands of encrypted communications between Lima and Kabecz. Shockingly, more than 75 animals were filmed or photographed being tortured and killed between May and October 2024, with some incidents involving a sexual component.

Additionally, authorities uncovered conversations between the couple discussing plans to torture a child, with a disturbing sexual element present. However, there were no children directly involved, and the couple does not have any children of their own, according to Const. Stephen Spencer.

Further investigation revealed that Kabecz had set up an underground network on the dark web, where prospective members had to submit a video of themselves killing an animal to gain entry. The couple not only facilitated the creation and distribution of this content but also profited from it. Moreover, images of child pornography were accessed on a device belonging to the couple between May and October 2024.

In a shocking twist, Lima and Kabecz were rearrested on Nov. 25 and faced additional charges. Lima was charged with conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, possession of proceeds of crime, bestiality, and other animal-related offences. Kabecz faced charges of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm and compelling bestiality. Despite being previously released on bail, Kabecz was back in custody, while Lima’s bail hearing was canceled, and she was returned to custody.

The investigation has expanded internationally, involving law enforcement agencies in several other countries. Spencer described this case as the most significant they have seen, encompassing various criminal offences. However, police have not identified any other individuals in Winnipeg involved in these heinous acts.

Amidst public outrage, animal rights activists gathered outside the Winnipeg Law Courts building to protest the abuse. Kristy Zamonsky, a social worker and protester, expressed shock at the disturbing details of the case, emphasizing the level of evilness displayed by the couple.

Anyone with information related to this case is urged to contact the east district community support unit or the provincial animal care line. Reports of animal cruelty can also be made to the Winnipeg Police Service or anonymously through Crime Stoppers. It is essential to handle this matter with patience and trust in the legal process, as acts of vigilantism will not be tolerated.
