Woman dies in custody at Jeffco jail

A woman found unresponsive in her cell at Jefferson County Detention Facility dies

Tragedy struck the Jefferson County Detention Facility early Wednesday morning as a woman was found unresponsive in her cell, ultimately leading to her death, according to officials from the sheriff’s office.

The woman, identified as 37-year-old Sasha Chavez, was discovered by a deputy just before 5:55 a.m. Medical staff and deputies administered two doses of naloxone and performed CPR for 30 minutes in an attempt to revive her. Despite their efforts, Chavez was pronounced dead at 6:40 a.m.

The circumstances surrounding Chavez’s death will be closely scrutinized by the 1st Judicial District’s Critical Incident Response Team. Additionally, the coroner’s office will conduct an investigation to determine the exact cause of death.
