EXCLUSIVE: A first-term House GOP firebrand is calling for the arrest of state governors who defy federal immigration laws.

Rep. Brandon Gill, R-Texas, stated in an interview with Fox News Digital that governors openly flouting federal law and obstructing federal law enforcement should face consequences.

The discussion took place during the House Oversight Committee’s hearing on sanctuary states, where Democratic governors of New York, Illinois, and Minnesota were present.

Meanwhile, outside of Washington, tensions have been escalating in Los Angeles as rioters clash with law enforcement. Democratic leaders in California, including Governor Gavin Newsom, have accused the Trump administration of exacerbating the situation.

President Trump has called for the arrest of Governor Newsom, a move criticized by Democrats as authoritarian. However, Rep. Gill believes that if any state governors are found to have violated federal immigration laws, they should be held accountable.

A spokesperson for Governor Newsom responded to Gill’s comments, asserting that California’s state laws do not conflict with federal laws.

The legal dispute between Newsom and Trump is not new, as California has previously defended its sanctuary law against federal challenges.

During the sanctuary state hearing, Rep. Gill focused on Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, accusing him of being lenient towards illegal immigration. Pritzker clarified that his support was for asylum seekers, not illegal immigrants.

Gill also questioned Pritzker’s administration’s funding for organizations advocating for abolishing ICE, to which Pritzker stated he does not support dismantling immigration enforcement agencies.

Despite the legal and political tensions, the debate over immigration policies continues to be a contentious issue at both the state and federal levels.
